Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
